{solo} Dead Leaves / All You Shadows / Suicidal Revival / {w/Brian Alter} Sweat Through / Season For The Crows > Goin’ Out West (Tom Waits) / Dry Up Like A Dream > Rusty Blade / Cold, Cold Hands / Maggie’s Farm (Bob Dylan)
Sam was out of town, so Brian & I tried our first drum/guitar duo show opening for the absolutely cool Korey Nagel (who bears a striking resemblance to actor Jason Lee). We had a good time and probably sounded bigger than a two piece band…but we missed Sam.
August 18, 2009: High Dive, Seattle, WA
w/The Devil’s Club and Shapiro’s Buick
Gotta Get Right > All You Shadows > Cool Your Guns / Seen The Glory / You Gotta Move > Dry Up Like A Dream > The Reaper’s Son / Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Blind Willie Johnson/Led Zeppelin)
Before heading off to tour Oregon, we snuck another local show in after The Devil’s Club invited us to fill a last-minute opening slot. We had fun, met local rockers Shapiro’s Buick, saw a few friends, and had a few drinks on the house.
August 1st, 2009: New Frontier Lounge, Tacoma, WA
w/JD Hobson, Sam Marshall Trio, and Memphis Radio Kings
Gotta Get Right > All You Shadows > Lake Of Fire > Commotion > Golgotha Drone > Interlude/Messenger Angels > You Gotta Move (traditional) > Cool Your Guns / Weeds Grow Around / Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Blind Willie Johnson/Led Zeppelin)
This was a hell of great bill, especially considering a band dropped out without telling anyone (I found out by accident less than a week before the show). Huge thanks to JD and MRK, who both joined us at the last minute. New Frontier has a lot of potential and it’s a great place to play…hopefully more Tacoma locals discover its glory.
July 30, 2009: The Comet, Seattle, WA
w/Half Light, Gertrude’s Hearse, and Sneaky Thieves
All You Shadows > Commotion (Creedence Clearwater Revival) > Golgotha Drone > Cold, Cold Hands /{w/Barb Hunter} Weeds Grow Around / Cool Your Guns / {no Barb} Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Blind Willie Johnson/Led Zeppelin)
Always a good time at The Comet (making up for a less than good time at The Central), plus we got to play with long-time friends Half Light and Sneaky Thieves (as well as Gertrude’s Hearse), and Barb Hunter joined us on cello for a couple of songs; Barb played on our upcoming album and she’s phenomenal. We finished our ridiculously short set with Led Zeppelin’s version of “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,” which went over like gangbusters.
July 11th, 2009: The Central Saloon, Seattle, WA
w/Professor Gall and The Devil’s Club
Gotta Get Right > Seen The Glory / Sweat Through / Cold, Cold Hands > Way Down In The Hole (Tom Waits) > Dry Up Like A Dream > The Reaper’s Son > All You Shadows > To Bring You My Love (PJ Harvey) / Long Black Lilies >Golgotha Drone > Cool Your Guns > I Am The Rust
Playing with our Portland pals Professor Gall and new local partners in crime The Devil’s Club. It could have been a great show, but the door guys hassled just about everybody coming into the bar, plus we had the worst sound guy in Seattle running the show–even better that he tried to blame me for his lack of skill. Load-out was capped off (pun intended) with gunshots fired a block down the street, followed by chaos and squad cars. Luckily–amazingly–nobody was hurt (as confirmed by the SPD report), and it made a lame gig more infamous than memorable.
June 19, 2009: The Sunset, Seattle, WA
w/Hurricane Chaser and Lost Dogma
Gotta Get Right > Seen The Glory > To Bring You My Love (PJ Harvey) / All You Shadows > Help Me Make It Through The Night (Kris Kristofferson) / Cold, Cold Hands / Long Black Lilies > Golgotha Drone > Cool Your Guns / Weeds Grow Around
Great times with our friends Hurricane Chaser (featuring Brad Zeffren, who recorded and produced our new album) and Lost Dogma. This marked the addition of keyboards to our sound as Sam split his time playing bass and keys. New arrangements and a new cover by PJ Harvey!
May 8th,2009: The Backroom @ Piecora’s, Seattle, WA
w/Andrea Wittgens
Our first acoustic set as a band–though still technically plugged in–and sharing the bill with our extremely talented friend Andrea Wittgens. I had just gotten over a killer cold but managed to hold on to my voice for the night. A cool music spot located in the back of Piecora’s Pizza; big thanks to King Jill for inviting us to play!
May 1st,2009: The Brick, Roslyn, WA
w/Red Jacket Mine
A small (and largely unresponsive) audience. Great food and a cool place, but maybe we’re not Roslyn’s cup of joe.
April 24, 2009: Jules Maes Saloon, Georgetown, WA
w/Professor Gall and Golden Robot Army
Gotta Get Right/ Way Down In The Hole (Tom Waits) / Sweat Through / The Reaper’s Son / All You Shadows / Skoal Bandits / Long Black Lilies > Golgotha Drone > Let The Wind Know / Help Me Make It Through The Night (Kris Kristofferson) > Messenger Angels > Suicidal Revival / Cold, Cold Hands / I Am The Rust
Playing with Professor Gall (Portland, OR) and Golden Robot Army, we rolled out one of our tightest shows to a bigger audience than I’m used to seeing at this Georgetown hideaway.
April 1-6, 2009: Electrokitty, Seattle, WA
Mixing ‘The Gospel Of Rust’ with Brad Zeffren. The album is complete!
February 28, 2009: Conor Byrne Pub, Seattle, WA
w/John Craigie and Sam Marshall Trio
Sam Marshall and I have played many solo shows together, but this was the first time that our respective trios played on the same bill. It was a great night despite the audience being a little unresponsive–though, frankly, any show that followed our great reception at The Tractor was bound to be a little flat. Maybe out of frustration, I went totally ape-shit for “I Am The Rust”–but it was all good, clean fun (except for my steady stream of foul language during the finale).
January 18, 2009: The Tractor Tavern, Seattle, WA
w/Whiting Tennis and Painted Hills
Sharing the night with Whiting Tennis and Painted Hills (a promising new band who, unfortunately, broke up two months after this show). We took a healthy break from the stage over the holidays and had plenty of energy for our most powerfully played set to date–and the audience was amazingly responsive. Damn, I missed playing at the Tractor, and this was quite a comeback.
